STEM Week

So this week was STEM week! STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Maths, we have a full week of doing activities around STEM.

We did a day around crystal maze! We had to complete activities such as: Spot the difference, Building a bridge to hold books, Building a tower out of pasta and marshmallows, seeing if a paperclip will float, drawing shapes while blindfolded, logic challenges and finally in teams to try and get an inflatable whale across the room and not being able to touch the floor. As you may know afterwards you go in a dome to collect golden tickets, I ( Immy ) didn't go in the dome but Louis did.

"It looked crazy! There were lots of golden and silver tickets flying around. In the TV show the gold gains points and the silver removes points, however it didn't matter in this game. It was really hard to catch the tickets; you'd catch one then it would fly away. Or one would get stuck in your hair and it would fly out when you tried to get it.  Unfortunately Raleigh one the year 7 crystal maze challenge. This means Ben won." - Louis
My favourite activity was trying to get the paper clip to float, we tried everything! It got near the end of the slot so Miss gave us some hints. We finally got it! We were second to figure it out! You had to put the toilet sheet in the water, wait a second and then put the paper clip on. Then toilet sheet sunk and the paper clip floated!

We begun the week with Forensics Day! In maths there was a murder :O! Mr Denham was murdered by Mr Davis! We didn't know that so we had to try and work out who was the killer by measuring stride length and height and time tables. The videos are available here for your cringing pleasure: Part One and Part Two. We missed English and did a forensics activity instead, doing shoe prints and thumb print tests with students from the University of Worcester.

On Tuesday it was Pi day. Oh how we love the numbers 3.141592654! In science we discovered how much energy was in a pie crust by setting it on fire and testing how hot the water in the test tube became. In my testing the filo pastry had the most energy! In PE we had to do a high intensity work out to burn off the calories in a pie. It was hard work! But finally we got to eat delicious pies in the cafeteria. Mmmmm....
